Here are the top highlights of the 6-day tour from Casablanca:
Your Moroccan exploration begins with an early morning pickup from your accommodation in Casablanca. Our first landmark is the monumental Hassan II Mosque, an architectural marvel and one of the world’s largest religious structures. We then proceed north to Rabat, the political capital. Here, we delve into history with a visit to the tranquil Oudaya Kasbah, a picturesque fortified district overlooking the ocean. We continue to the Hassan Tower, the imposing minaret of an unfinished 12th-century mosque, and the sacred Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the final resting place of the Moroccan royal family. After a day rich in history, we conclude with a scenic drive inland to Fes. Upon arrival, you will check into a traditional riad nestled within the ancient medina.
The day is dedicated to a guided immersion in Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural heart. Following a hearty traditional breakfast, we venture into Fes el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed Old Medina and the largest living medieval city in the world. Your guide will navigate the labyrinthine alleys, revealing historical gems like the Al-Qarawiyyin University and ancient artisan souks. The tour continues to the Mellah (historic Jewish Quarter), showcasing a different architectural style, and includes a view of the impressive Andalusian Mosque. In the afternoon, we transition to the more modern atmosphere of Fes el-Jdid and the European-influenced French Quarter, providing a complete contrast to the old city.
Today marks the long but visually spectacular drive to the Sahara. We depart Fes, passing through the unexpected alpine environment of Ifrane, often dubbed “Little Switzerland.” Our next stop is the Azrou Cedar Forest, where you can encounter the famous Barbary macaques in their natural habitat and admire the ancient cedar trees. We pause for lunch in Midelt, a central trading town. The afternoon brings a dramatic landscape change as we descend into the Ziz Valley, an immense ribbon of palm groves and ancient kasbahs carved into red canyon walls. Upon reaching Merzouga, you trade your vehicle for a camel. The unforgettable sunset camel trek takes you deep into the Erg Chebbi Dunes to your desert camp for a night of Berber drumming and stargazing.
Greet the day with a majestic Sahara sunrise over the golden dunes. After breakfast at the camp, you will return to the edge of the dunes and begin a full desert exploration by 4×4. The circuit focuses on the unique life and terrain of the Merzouga region. We stop to visit a Nomad Family, gaining insight into their traditional, enduring lifestyle. We then visit Khamlia Village, known for its residents’ deep cultural ties to Gnawa music, which you will experience live. The adventure continues to the abandoned Mefes Mines, offering a look at colonial-era history, and includes passing by remote oases and dry lake beds, showcasing the Sahara’s diverse ecosystems.
We begin our journey west, returning toward the mountains. Our first stop is the historic trading post of Rissani, where we explore the traditional souk, famous for its dates, spices, and local market activities (especially busy on specific market days). The drive continues through rugged desert terrain and into the immense Draa Valley, a lush, green corridor defined by miles of ancient palm groves, providing a stunning contrast to the desert sand. We pass through towns like Nkob and Alnif before arriving at the Dades Valley in the evening, known for its towering red cliffs and unique rock formations.
The final day is filled with cinematic landscapes as we return to Marrakesh. The morning drive takes us through the fragrant Rose Valley, known for its springtime harvest, and the green expanse of the Skoura Oasis. We pause in Ouarzazate to visit the monumental Taourirt Kasbah, offering insight into the region’s historic tribal power. Next, we visit the highlight of Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO site previously visited on day 3, allowing for further reflection and photography. Optionally, a slight detour may be taken to visit the crumbling but impressive Telouet Kasbah. The final leg of the tour takes us back over the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, descending into the plains to conclude your 6-day journey with a drop-off at your final destination in Marrakesh.
The best times to enjoy this tour are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is pleasant both in the cities and the desert.
Yes, most riads, hotels, and desert camps can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free meals if informed in advance.
You can bring one medium-sized suitcase and a small backpack. For the desert part, it’s best to pack a smaller backpack with essentials.
Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and riads along the route, but desert camps generally don’t have Wi-Fi due to their remote location.
Wear long, loose-fitting clothes for sun protection and comfort during the camel ride. In the desert, bring layers because days are warm, but nights can be cool, especially between November and March.
